Onion is mainly sown and planted, and the seed collection methods include large bulb collecting method, small bulb collecting method, small plant collecting method and continuous seed collecting method.

The detailed methods of collecting onion seeds are as follows:

Seed collection method of onion

1. Large bulb seed collection method

The seed collection method of large bulb is a seed collection method in most parts of China. The seedlings were sown from September to October in the first year, and the seedlings were exposed or stored in winter. In the second summer, the large bulbs were harvested and good individuals were selected. After 4 years of storage, the susceptible plants were eliminated and planted in the field from September to November. In the cold area, the mother ball was planted in spring in the third year, and the seeds were harvested in June. The period from sowing to seed harvest was about 21 months.

two。 Bulblet seed collection method

The method of collecting seeds from bulbs is often used in spring sowing areas. After thawing the soil in early spring and raising seedlings by direct seeding early, the bulbs mature in summer, the bulbs with a diameter of more than 3 cm were selected, stored and overwintered, and the seeds were planted and collected in the second year, from sowing to harvest for about 16-19 months, which shortened the seed collection cycle and reduced the cost. it can be used for reproduction and production, but the species is degraded without mature bulb character selection.

3. Small plant seed collection method

Small plant seed collection method, also known as non-heading seed collection method, sowed from July to September in the first year, grew into large seedlings before winter, reached the standard of green vernalization and passed the vernalization stage to ensure bolting and flowering in the second year, with a cycle of about 11-13 months, shortening the seed collection cycle, but did not form a bulb, and its seed character was degraded. At the same time, due to the inheritance of early bolting character, it will lead to the failure of cultivation bulb in production.

4. Continuous seed collection method

After the seed was harvested by the large bulb method, several small bulbs were formed at the base of the plant, which were planted in autumn after harvest and storage, and the dry area could also spend the summer in situ. After germination, it changed from 1 female bulb to 3-4 female bulbs. In the following year, the number of bolts was collected in the first year and in the second year, which reduced the cost, shortened the seed collection period, ensured the seed quality and increased the yield.

The sowing time of onion is one of the key factors affecting its yield and quality, so timely sowing is very important.
