Australia has stopped exporting lobsters to China after Chinese customs stepped up inspections of live seafood.

David Littleproud, Australia's agriculture minister, pointed out that Australia was seriously concerned about the additional inspections that began on Friday and was trying to get the Chinese to explain. Trade Minister Simon Birmingham also said that all importers should adhere to the same standards and should not have discriminatory screening practices, and the Chinese authorities should rule out any such discriminatory actions.

China is the largest market for Australian lobster. Figures show that Australian lobster exports totaled A $752 million (HK $4.09 billion) in 2018-2019, of which about 94 per cent went to China.

China and Australia have fallen to a freezing point in recent years amid fears that trade in live seafood will become the latest target of retaliation by the Beijing government.
